Think of it as a fanfare preceding the reading of a royal decree; or maybe it\u2019s a funky version of a wedding march.\u00a0 Written by Bryant and producer Scott Bomar, \u201cYour Love Is to Blame\u201d has the chorus of a good blues song: “Nothing in my life is the same\/Your love is to blame.\u201d But here, \u201cblame\u201d gets a halo. \u201cI tried to turn this one around,\u201d Don says with a slight grin. Then he explains, \u201cYour love is to blame because we are together!\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n Check out \u201cYour Love Is to Blame,\u201d available now.\u00a0 (https:\/\/donbryant.lnk.to\/youmakemefeel<\/a>)<\/strong><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n Produced by Scott Bomar, who recently scored Dolemite Is My Name and mixed by Matt Ross-Spang (Elvis Presley, Al Green, John Prine), You Make Me Feel continues Don\u2019s resurgence with newly written music and a revisit to Don\u2019s celebrated back catalog, where he\u2019s interpreting some of his songs for the first time.\u00a0 Musicians include members of the Hi Rhythm section \u2014 Howard Grimes, Archie \u201cHubbie\u201d Turner and Charles Hodges, who played on his by Al Green and Ann Peebles \u2014 with members of St. Paul and the Broken Bones and The Bo-Keys.<\/strong><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n \u201cIt feels good to have found my own voice,\u201d says Don, who never stopped writing.\u00a0 \u201cMusic has always been a part of me, I\u2019ve never given up on it, never let it go. If I\u2019m walking around, I\u2019m humming songs. Now, I\u2019m trying to let it all out. What I had, what I got, and what I\u2019m gonna get.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n Don is nearing the age of 80, and You Make Me Feel is his third solo album. His 1969 debut Precious Soul was produced by Willie Mitchel, who planned for Bryant to be Hi Records\u2019 next star.\u00a0 Don instead took a supporting role and made a career as a Hi Records hit man, namely as the songwriter and background singer for Peebles, who topped the charts in 1974 with \u201cI Can\u2019t Stand the Rain.\u201d\u00a0 Ann retired from music in 2012, and Don returned to the spotlight in 2017 with his second album, Don\u2019t Give Up on Love.<\/strong><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n \u201cI fell in love with Ann when she first came in to Hi,\u201d he reveals. \u201cBut there was so much going on with her\u2014recording, travel, so many around her\u2014it wasn\u2019t my time. And I wasn\u2019t in no hurry\u2014I knew I wasn\u2019t going nowhere! We got to know each other better and better and it opened up. It was a long drawn out situation, but for me it was love at first sight.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n One of the many standouts on Make You Feel is the reprise of \u201cDon\u2019t Turn Your Back on Me,\u201d a single Don originally released in 1965. The new version is slowed down, and as anyone who has ever pleaded\u2014for love, for life, for time\u2014we know that the slow petition is more effective\u2026 but so much harder to carry out.\u00a0 Don recorded a new version of \u201c99 Pounds\u201d \u201cto put some light on Ann,\u201d he demurs, and there\u2019s a punch to this new version that would make Willie Mitchell proud\u2014classic soul with a 21st century power.\u00a0 And he doesn\u2019t shy from the darker feelings; \u201cIs It Over\u201d sounds like it might date to 1973, when Otis Clay recorded Bryant\u2019s song, \u201cI Die a Little Each Day,\u201d also featured on the album.<\/strong><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n This is the first time Don released a version of his \u201cCracked Up Over You,\u201d recorded enough times to be an R&B chestnut.\u00a0 (Jr. Parker gave it a fine workout.) Don released the B-side \u201cI\u2019ll Go Crazy\u201d in 1968, and it it\u2019s only song on here he didn\u2019t write.\u00a0 He related to the hook: \u201cIf you love me any better, I’ll go crazy.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n \u201cMy main thing is to tell a story,\u201d reflects Don.\u00a0 \u201cTaking an idea and making a full story out of it is a challenge to me.
